Neo Vision’s Weekly Rant #32

Technology has brought numerous benefits to our lives, making information and resources more accessible. However, it has also significantly impacted our brains and behavior, rewiring them in ways that have made instant gratification the norm. While we can certainly order food, hail a ride, or purchase almost anything with the click of a button, it’s social media that has led us to believe that great things can be achieved overnight or with little effort.

Unfortunately, this false belief has led many to overlook or underestimate the power of patience and the concept of compounding. Instead of focusing on the long-term benefits of consistent effort, many people expect quick and easy results. This mindset can be detrimental not only to achieving our goals but also to our overall well-being.

In addition to the impact of social media on our mindset, it has also played a significant role in shaping our behavior and mental health. With the rise of platforms like Instagram and TikTok, it’s easier than ever to compare ourselves to others and their seemingly perfect lives. We see curated highlight reels of people’s accomplishments, vacations, and relationships, making us feel inadequate and envious.

This constant comparison can lead to many mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. It’s no wonder that rates of these conditions have been on the rise, with the pressure to keep up with the social media Joneses weighing heavily on our minds.

Moreover, society’s pressure to constantly achieve and succeed can also affect our mental health. From a young age, we are taught to strive for excellence and to measure our worth by our achievements. This can create a mindset where we only value ourselves based on what we have accomplished or what others think of us.

The combination of societal pressure and the constant comparison fueled by social media can be a toxic mix, leading to a sense of never feeling good enough or satisfied. It’s essential to take a step back and focus on what truly matters - our journey, growth, and happiness. And sometimes, that means embracing the power of patience and taking things one step at a time.

👁️‍🗨️ Coding 102: Writing code other people can read

It is important to keep in mind that maintaining code can be costly and time-consuming. To reduce the cost of future changes, it is crucial to write clean and easy-to-read code that follows good design practices such as modularity, readability, and maintainability.

A group of ten companies, including OpenAI and TikTok, have signed up for a new set of guidelines on how to build, create, and share AI-generated content responsibly. The recommendations call for more transparency about what the technology can and cannot do and for disclosure of when people might interact with this type of content. One of the most critical elements of the guidelines is a pact by the companies to include and research ways to tell users when they’re interacting with something generated by AI. However, some experts have criticized the voluntary guidelines, arguing that they should be mandatory and that the AI systems themselves could be made more responsible. Link here.

🛑 Stop saying “technical debt”

Using the term "tech debt" to refer to the difficulties in the development process often leads to confusion and misunderstandings. People tend to have different ideas of what it means, and it can cause the term to be applied to issues that don't necessarily fall under its definition. Equating it solely to bad code also causes further problems, such as not addressing the root causes of the issues. Rather than referring to "tech debt", the focus should be on measurable factors, such as the maintenance load, to identify areas of improvement.
